What is SAT?
The SAT is a standardised test widely used for college admissions in the United States. Introduced in 1926, its name and scoring have changed several times; originally called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, it is now known as SAT.
The SAT is owned, developed, and published by the College Board, a private, non-profit organisation in the United States. It is administered on behalf of the College Board by the Educational Testing Service. The test is intended to assess student’s readiness for college.

The current SAT, introduced in 2016, takes three hours to finish, plus 50 minutes for the SAT with essay. Scores in the SAT range from 400 to 1600, combining test results from two 800-point sections: mathematics, and critical reading and writing. Taking the SAT is required for freshman entry to many, but not all, colleges and universities in the United States. The SAT exam is held in offline mode i.e. pen-paper based.

The other SAT test is SAT Subject test which is optional for students to apply. As some of the universities demand one or two subject tests for their admission criteria so students can choose their SAT Subject tests which is held for 1 hour.

The College Board do not specify any SAT eligibility criteria for appearing in the entrance exams for undergraduate studies. However, since SAT scores are considered for admission to colleges, students are expected to opt for the test when they are in junior or senior high school. According to the SAT eligibility 2018, there is no maximum or minimum age limit set by the conducting authority.

The SAT exam is taken mostly for the admission at the US colleges and a few other countries for pursuing various undergraduate programmes. As per the SAT syllabus 2018, the test is designed in two distinctive types, namely SAT and SAT Subject Test. Both the SAT exam formats follow different patterns to measure candidate’s knowledge. Since SAT is attempted by students who are still in their junior and senior high schools or equivalent, the SAT syllabus 2018 is conceived taking the similar academic standards. Hence, SAT test is based on subjects taught in high school programmes.
